Notes for CHARLES JONES TRAVIS:  Re: Richard L. Travis in Publication: "Ancestors and Descendants of Thomas Travis"

Charles Jones Travis was named after his maternal grandfather, Charles Jones.  He was living at Blue Lick in Bullitt County, KY when he married Emma Tolson.  He joined the Union Army at Louisville on August 8, 1862.  His two brothers, John and James, also enlisted that day.  Charles was assigned to duty in Company L, 5th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry Volunteers under the command of Captain Hare and were assigned the duty of protecting a strategic river crossing at Munfordville, KY, in September, 1862.

Charles and brother, James, were taken prisoner by General Bragg's Army on September 14, 1862.  They were paroled three days later.  "In the early months of the war, prisoners were paroled and sent home after promising not to take up arms again."  Charles honored that promise.  He continued in the Union Army (not taking up arms) until discharge on March 8, 1865.

He became guardian to Jacob and Nancy Jane Travis, infant children of his brother, John S. Travis, who died in the Civil War.

In 1871, Charles and Emma moved to Shoals, Indiana.... then to Louisville.... then to Oskaloosa, Iowa.....then to Council Bluffs, IA.... then finally to Chase County, Nebraska (near Enders).  They farmed there for nearly thirty years.  He received an old age pension of $30 per month.  He died at his home in Enders, Nebraska, on March 8, 1915 at the age of 78 years and 8 months.  Burial was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Imperial, Nebraska.
