WILLIAM1) was born July 08, 1836 in Louisville,
Kentucky, and died March 08, 1915 in Enders, Chase County, Nebraska.
He married EMMA "EMILY" TOLSON March 24, 1859 in Charleston,
Indiana, daughter of JOHN TOLSON. She
was born March 04, 1838 in Brooks Station, Indiana, and died March 10, 1927 in
Independence, Missouri.

Charles Jones Travis was named after his maternal
grandfather, Charles Jones. He
was living at Blue Lick in Bullitt County, KY when he married Emma Tolson.
He joined the Union Army at Louisville on August 8, 1862.
His two brothers, John and James, also enlisted that day.
Charles was assigned to duty in Company L, 5th Regiment, Kentucky
Cavalry Volunteers under the command of Captain Hare and were assigned the
duty of protecting a strategic river crossing at Munfordville, KY, in
September, 1862.
Charles and brother, James, were taken prisoner by
General Bragg's Army on September 14, 1862.
They were paroled three days later.
"In the early months of the war, prisoners were paroled and sent
home after promising not to take up arms again."
Charles honored that promise. He
continued in the Union Army (not taking up arms) until discharge on March 8,
1865.
He became guardian to Jacob and Nancy Jane Travis,
infant children of his brother, John S. Travis, who died in the Civil War.
In 1871, Charles and Emma moved to Shoals, Indiana....
then to Louisville.... then to Oskaloosa, Iowa.....then to Council Bluffs,
IA.... then finally to Chase County, Nebraska (near Enders).
They farmed there for nearly thirty years.
He received an old age pension of $30 per month.
He died at his home in Enders, Nebraska, on March 8, 1915 at the age of
78 years and 8 months. Burial was
in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Imperial, Nebraska.
Later, Emma moved to Independence, Missouri and lived
with her two sons: Philip and Harris Benton Travis.
She died at the age of 89.
He was 5'8", blue eyes, fair complexion and light
hair.

Everett was a bachelor.
According to family tradition, Great Grandfather, Charles Jones Travis,
met President Lincoln twice during the Civil War.
His son, Everett, resembled Abe Lincoln.
Hence, he acquired the nickname and was know as "Uncle Abe".
