A Brief Family HistoryCharles Edward (Ed) Travis came west with his father, Charles Jones Travis and mother, Emma "Emily" Tolson ("Little Grandma") and family from Kentucky, with brief and disappointing stays through Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, and Iowa. In the Spring of 1885 they ventured to Chase County in western Nebraska where they homesteaded. Ed got a teaching certificate and began teaching school. He met and married one of his students, Mary Eunice Speer. They lived in a sod house ("soddy") had a farm, raised horses, mules, cows, chickens and children. Back to Top
OrganizationThe Travis Family Foundation was officially organized at the 1982 Family Reunion held at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. James (Jim) Travis Closson was elected Director of the Foundation and has been sustained in that position up to the present. The Foundation collects annual dues of $10 per family member 18 years and older. Newsletters are sent to family member households. A directory of all of the descendants of Ed and Mary Travis is published every three years. The Foundation also holds a Family Reunion every three years. Back to Top
Foundation DirectorThe Director of the Travis Family Foundation is responsible for all aspects of the directory, reunions, communications, dues, and archive. The Director works with the Travis Advisory Group, as well as other volunteers, to accomplish all the tasks of the foundation. All work done on the foundation by family members is on a volunteer basis.
